Thomas County gets new deputy for courthouse

December 15, 2006

Thomasville-- Thomas County is getting an extra deputy to help ensure courthouse security. Comissioners voted 5 to 2 to add the deputy in a special meeting called yesterday.

Sheriff Carlton Powell originally requested 6 more deputies for security detail next year. But at a budget hearing several weeks ago, commissioners granted him only 2.

"One of the issues that we'd had was the fact that we didn't feel we had sufficient personell to man the courthouse in the manner that we felt was necessary. And so we were able to meet with the judges and county commissioners and hopefully got it resolved," says Sheriff Powell.

Judge Arthur McLane explained to commissioners at the meeting the extent of the security needed to protect the courthouse.  Sheriff Powell says McLane's words are what helped get the extra deputy.
