Lowndes County - Eight restaurants in Lowndes County can officially begin serving alcohol on Sundays.

In November, Lowndes County voters approved a referendum to allow Sunday sales by the drink.

Tonight, County commissioners passed an ordinance that officially puts that law into affect.

In order to qualify 50-percent of the establishment's sales must come from food.

Commissioners hope it will boost sales for the businesses.  "The establishments in Lowndes County will be able to serve alcohol on Sunday in accordance with the ordinances. Many of them wanted it because New Years happens to fall on a Sunday this year so that will help them too," says Commission Chairman Rod Casey.

The county is not charging any additional license fees to restaurants that want to serve alcohol on Sunday.
