Albany -- A big day for some future school teachers. Twenty-four future education graduates were inducted into the PEN program.

PEN stands for Professional Embracing Novice and it partners a beginning teacher with a mentor who has experience in the profession.

The college of education says the mentoring support helps recruit and retain new educators.

Future teacher Dwight Leonard is a 48-year-old Marine retiree who will get his education degree on December 9th. He wants to reach out to young children including young males in the African American community.

Leonard said that their dropout rates are high and it's something that happens across the country.
