Commission studies alcohol license renewals

November 29, 2006

Albany -- No alcohol license renewals for Albany businesses just yet. After our investigation revealed businesses that sell alcohol on Sunday aren't being policed, the brakes were put on the normally rubber-stamp renewals.

Tuesday night, City Attorney Nathan Davis asked the commission to table the renewals so he could review the ordinance. The city is also preparing renewal forms to send to restaurants which owners will have to fill out. Renewals will require certified gross receipts for food and for alcohol sales.

Restaurants must prove that 50 percent of their money comes from the sale of food in order to sale alcohol on Sunday. Those receipts are auditable and distortion of the record could result in their license being revoked.

The forms will be sent out between now and December 5th. Licenses must be renewed by December 31st.
