Valdosta - The holiday season has officially begun in Valdosta as Mayor John Fretti and family lit the giant Christmas tree.

The tree lighting is part of the elaborate decorations featured throughout the city.

The lighting kicked off a large number of holiday events the city will feature this winter,.... including the Christmas parade hosted by WALB on Saturday December 2nd.  "Next weekend we are going to be having a very special first Friday, followed Saturday with the Jingle Bell Festival. We've got a 5K and 15K run, breakfast with Santa, and the theater guild will have their annual Christmas production," says Mayor John Fretti.

The Mayor has traditionally held the tree lighting ceremony the afternoon before thanksgiving.

The City is working to have a larger night time ceremony and celebration in years to come.
