Albany - How can Albany better handle flooding? Consultants from the U-S Geological Survey will study ways to improve water flow in the Flint River through Albany to avoid major flooding such as what happened in 1994.

Some of the suggestions now are to remove a man made island, straighten out a curve in the river, and take dirt out from beneath the Oakridge bridge. Those actions should help water move down the river faster. Bob Alexander says, "By doing these types of things, this will lower the elevation for when we have another flood."

The improvements could be cost prohibitive, and even with them, there is no guarantee that flooding will not occur.
