Albany -- With Thanksgiving a week away, we're entering the busiest time of year for charities that help feed the hungry. The Food Bank of Southwest Georgia has already given away 6,200 turkeys and 4,500 hams to their partner organizations.

It's the time of year when people spread Holiday cheer, and when the community comes together to help those less fortunate.

It's also a time when the Food Bank of Southwest Georgia gets busy.

"We're getting food in from different sources, and it will go out. As soon as we get it in, we'll have about a week turnover. It will be going out pretty fast," said Dwayne Myles.

Food Bank director Dwayne Myles says the organization collects and purchases canned foods to give to their 340 partner agencies. Each agency places an order with the food bank, picks a day and time to pick it up, and then disperses it to the needy.

To keep up with demand during the holidays, the food banks hosts many canned food drives to meet their goals.

"We care about the community, and we want to contribute to the people in this community," said Obie Johnson.

Businesses say they are more than happy to collect canned goods and help out.

The holiday season food drive is going on at 12 different businesses throughout the Albany community. Those who want to donate just look for a blue barrel that says Food Bank Canned Food Drive.

This year the food drive has more than doubled over last year. From the barrels around town the Food Bank expects to collect up to 3,000 pounds of canned goods.

Donations that will bring the food bank closer to meeting its goal of serving others.

"It's just a great feeling, and on the kids faces, to see them to be able to have turkeys and hams and corn and beans during their Thanksgiving holidays. It's just a blessing," said Myles.

Donations to the food banks are a blessing for families in need, and one community members can share with others this holiday season.

You can donate at: Dougherty Middle School, M&M Mars, All Smiles Dental Clinic, Citi Financial, East Albany Movie Gallery, Sherwood Christian Academy, American Lube Fast, Southern Family Markets, Sears, Harvey's, Fulton Paper Company.
