Albany - - Albany's Airport Director wants to hire extra security officers after the city cut those positions two years ago to save money.

At the start of the 2005 fiscal year, the city cut three security officers positions in order to save $73,000.

Airport Director Yvette Aehle says the move ended up hurting the airport because her six current officers have become overworked.

"They're having to do a lot more work with less people available. When someone takes sick time, takes vacation time, needs to go fulfill training requirements, they have to leave and we have to figure out how to cover that shift so we usually have to pull someone from another shift to cover that, so they are working a lot more than they probably should've been," says Director Yvette Aehle.

Last year, Aehle says the airport spent $67,000 in overtime, compared to the $24,500 it usually spends in overtime.

She wants the city to re-instate those three extra positions in its next budget.
