Information from The Georgia Department of Labor- The Georgia Department of Labor says Metro Albany's unemployment rate increased to 8.7 percent in June, up three-tenths of a percentage point from 8.4More >>
The rate increased because of seasonal factors, such as the summer job loss among non-contract school workers and temporary layoffs, primarily in manufacturing. There were 60,500 jobs in Albany in June, down by 300, or 0.5 percent, from 60,800 in May. Most of the loss came in state government and the service-related industries.More >>

Meigs-  A south Georgia man is charged with raping a teenage girl at a weekend slumber party. Now that man is jailed after the girl told her mother what happened in a letter.

Twenty eight year old Derrick Cochran is charged with rape and aggravated assault. The 15-year old victim was staying the night at a friend's house in Meigs. Cochran is the friend's older brother. Investigators say Cochran got up in the middle of the night and forced the girl to have intercourse with him. Investigators say, because more children are being educated about these type of crimes, more crimes are being reported.

"We think it's a better job of reporting. We encourage kids to report, they're now taught in school to report with good touches and bad touches, we just think it's a better job of reporting," said Inv. Tim Watkins, Thomas Co. Sheriff's Office.

This isn't Cochran's first run-in with the Sheriff's office. Cochran's been convicted of burglary and drug charges dating back to when he was 14.
