Dougherty County --  Albany's Marine Corps Logistics Base celebrated the Corps' 231st birthday Thursday.

The Marine Band played the Corps' theme to recognize the event. The Marine Corps was established November 10, 1775.

An annual tradition part of the ceremony is a cake cutting. As custom, the oldest Marine at the Albany base, 54 year old Lt. Colonel John Hergert, received the first piece of cake. Then he passed the cake to the youngest Marine at the base, 19 year old Lance Corporal Tiffanie Spry.

The ceremony symbolizes the passing of history and tradition to the next generation of Marines. Spry said "it was neat marching up behind the cake, seeing all the Marines. Celebrating the Marine Corps birthday, it was really awesome."

At the ceremony, base commanders reminded the Marines to remember their comrades fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan as they celebrated the Corps 231st Birthday.
