Americus-- Georgia's state School Superintendent says she wants to build on strides in public education she's overseen during her first term in office.

State School Superintendent Kathy Cox visited Sumter Middle School, Sumter Elementary, Americus Sumter High School and Georgia Southwestern Monday. Cox says for the first time, Georgia's graduation rate is above 70 percent.

She says new graduation coaches in high schools and middle schools are helping. Cox says the next step is achieving a balance between good teaching and good assessment results without kids feeling like they're just taking tests.

"We're in the midst of kind of finding that balance across the state and that's been a concern but I think we will find it as long as we stick to the standards," said Cox.

Cox faces Democratic candidate Denise Majette and Libertarian David Chastaine in the general election.
