Moultrie -- A family is the target of a violent and deadly attack just days after they moved to Moultrie. A 21-year-old Hispanic man is dead and a 16-year-old is recovering from a gunshot wound after a home invasion early Monday morning.
Moultrie Police say a language barrier has prevented them from determining a motive for this crime.
Moultrie Police have four spent .22 caliber shell casings and not much else to go on after two young men were shot, one fatally inside a Moultrie home just after two a.m. "Talking with a Hispanic deputy and one of our Hispanic officers, we found out that two or three subjects had entered the house and a shooting took place," said Moultrie Police Sgt. Roger Lindsay.
A 16-year-old was shot once in the leg and taken to the hospital, a group of Hispanic neighbors told police about the other 21-year-old victim shot three times in the chest. "By the time the officer had arrived at the house the subject that was there who had also been shot, he had expired at the house," Lindsay said.
The family just moved to Moultrie days ago, they had jobs lined up, but hadn't started working. The house had no electricity and was dark when the shots rang out. "The 16-year- old juvenile of course did not see who shot him, so he stated, the decedent of course, we don't know if he actually confronted one of them or not," said Lindsay.
None of the family speaks English, leaving police with a language barrier and few leads. "At this point we don't have any motive in this, we're not exactly clear what took place except what we've been able to learn from the people that were there, so we're still interviewing most of them," the detective said.
Moultrie Police say they're following up on the few details they have but no arrests have been made. The case remains open. Police also weren't sure just how many people were living in the home or just how they are related.
