October 20, 2006 Tifton - - The mother of a 10-year old student accused of bringing a gun to school says the school system banned the boy from attending any Tift County public school.

Latracia Stevenson says in a hearing yesterday the Tift County Board of Education hearing officer banned her son Markel from the county's schools. He was a student at Specener Elementary.

Students there said Markel brought a loaded gun to the campus. Stevenson says that's not true. She says at the hearing, the hearing officer did not show her the video that school administrators say showed him with the gun.

Markel is in the 4th grade and the only alternative school in Tift County doesn't take students until they are in the 6th grade. Stevenson's lawyer plans to appeal the ruling.

Our call to the School Hearing officer today was not returned.
