Americus -- The president of Georgia Southwestern State University resigns.

Michael L. Hanes will leave the Americus campus January 16 to become the president and CEO at the Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

Hanes became president of Georgia Southwestern in 1996.

Under his leadership, the college expanded its academic programs and created a state-recognized campus historic district.

A search for his successor will begin soon.
