Lake Blackshear Retreat has it all

October 19, 2006

Lake Blackshear -- We're on the grounds of The Retreat-- a state-owned resort and conference center at Veterans Memorial State Park.

Every year this park is one of the most visited in state park system, attracting more than a million visitors a year.  You can camp, hike, play golf, and visit indoor and outdoor military exhibits here at the park.

Of course, the main attraction is the lake. The state built a new marina that opened in May. Up to 60-boat owners can rent slips here.

You can also rent pontoon boats, runabouts, or the big event boat called Lady Liberty.   "In the lower portion of the boat, it's all air conditioned," said Marina Manager Ivan Williams. "Up top you get a nice breeze going down the lake. A lot of good cruises are in the evening, six to ten type cruises and they go out and see the sunset and then come back in. A nice time to be out there having dinner on the boat and enjoy the lake."

The marina schedules regular dinner cruises, or you can reserve the entire boat for up to 50 people for a four hour trip. The marina is located right here at The Retreat. It includes a restaurant as well as guest rooms, villas, and lakeside cabins.
