Valdosta - A South Georgia school is recognized as one of the best in its district.

The Governors Office of Student Achievement presented SL Mason Elementary in Valdosta the Silver Award for Greatest Gain Meeting and Exceeding Standards.

To earn the award, a school must meet AYP standards 2 years in a row and have seen significant test score gains.  SL Mason ranked among the top elementary schools in the state and had a 5% gain in the last year.

They are now looking to climb to Gold or Platinum status next year.
"We'll go back and re-evaluate and look at what we think helped us get to this point and continue with that and continue to read and study," says Darlene Watson, Instructional lead teacher at SL Mason.

SL Mason was the only Lowndes County school to receive this award.
