Albany -- Dougherty County Police are trying to sift through what happened to cause a fatal crash off Old Dawson Road just before 4:30 Friday afternoon.

The male driver was the only one in the car, and may have been speeding as he attempted to turn from Old Dawson Road to Byron Plantation.

The gold four door car came to rest in a yard facing the opposite direction it came from. Witnesses told police the car sailed off Old Dawson Road for nearly 500 feet, traveling through three fences and two yards before breaking through a line of shrubs, and stopping.

Pieces of the car were left along the way. Witnesses called 911. The driver was dead at the scene. The car has a Dougherty County license plate.
