Baker: Stay ahead of the crooks

October 6, 2006

Albany -- Georgia's Attorney General says law enforcement and state legislators must work together to fight identity theft.

Thurbert Baker says criminals are not dumb and continually come up with new schemes and methods to steal your personal financial information and loot your bank accounts.

Baker says prosecutors and legislators have to be ready to update laws to deal with new theft methods.

"They are out there everyday watching what we are doing on the law enforcement side. And they are trying to figure out ways to get around it. So we have got to stay vigilant in that area. We've got to improve our laws. We've got to make sure we are as tough as we can be."

Baker said Identity theft is still the fastest growing crime in Georgia, despite years of warnings to the public.
