Chicken plant workers find out TB status

October 6, 2006

Mitchell County -- More than 700 workers at a Mitchell County chicken plant found today whether they have tuberculosis, but the results haven't been made public.

Southwest Georgia Public Health District officials spent the day at the Equity Group plant reviewing initial skin test results with employees.

A worker in the deboning section of the plant has TB, so health workers tested all employees in his department.

They don't want to report how many people tested positive for T-B until they finish the screening process early next week.

They're trying to determine if those who tested positive have an active strain of the disease.

We will report the health department's findings as soon as they are available.

Officials say the chicken processed at the plant is still safe.
