Camilla - More than 700 people at a South Georgia chicken processing plant are waiting to hear if they have contracted tuberculosis.

A worker in the deboning section of the Equity Group, formerly Cagle's in Mitchell County has TB. Now, co-workers are being tested.

They were given test shots Tuesday and the test prick spots will be checked tomorrow. Public Health says the chicken they process is NOT at risk of infection.

"TB infection is when you have the tb germ in your body and your immune system has prevented that from going to the next step, which is active TB case. You may have the TB germ in your body and you're not infectious at that time," says Public Health Worker Daniel Staib.

The man who tested positive does have an infectious form of the disease. He is now on medication and may be able to return to work in a couple of weeks.

Health officials should know early next week if any other employees contracted the airborne disease.
