Albany --  Some local students learned today that "a lot stands on reading".

That was the message at Southside Middle School as students welcomed city manager Alfred Lott. Lott was a guest speaker for the school's 25 Books campaign.

Teachers are encouraging students to read 25 books or 1 million words this school year.

"It's not often I get to do really good things in my job," Lott said. "Sometimes the work effort requires me to do things that are unpleasant but this is a good thing. I love the kids. It reminds me of the junior high school I went to. It was called Southside Jr. High School in Mobile Alabama."

The school's band and cheerleaders performed, along with cheerleaders from ASU. Students who participate in the reading program are eligible for prizes at the end of the school year.
