Valdosta - A very young Valdosta State women's cross-country team is relying on the leadership of senior Melissa Daugherty this fall.
The former Lowndes High distance runner is leading by example.
Daugherty won the individual title Saturday at the Embry Riddle meet in Daytona Beach in a time of 20:11.
Daugherty's first place finish help the VSU women place fourth in the team competition.
After earning first team all conference honors two years ago, Daugherty slipped a bit last season and was a second team all-Gulf South Conference selection.
Her goal in her final season is to get back on the first team and Saturday's win will certainly help her reach that goal.
Melissa Daugherty said "It gives me confidence is what it does. I know that from here on out the races are just going to get harder. So, it at least gives me confidence that I can go out and compete with the best of them."
The Valdosta State cross country teams will be in Milledgeville this weekend running in the Georgia Collegiate.
