Moultire - - Today is an important day for the Mexican Community. September 16th is the day Mexico gained its independence.
They marched with pride and excitement. It's a day many have been waiting for. The food is plenteous and there's enough enthusiasm to go around.
This is more than just a Mexican community getting together to celebrate, it's also about sharing their culture with others.
"We have Mexican people, we have black people, whites because we want to share this festival with them. We want to be united," says Luz Cooper.
The fun also has meaning. Organizers want to educate young Mexican Americans about why they're doing this in the first place.
"We happened to come young and get married and have children, those children have no idea of this," says Organizer Juana Williams.
So with each song and dance comes a history lesson.....on diez y seis de Septiembre....Mexicans all over the world celebrate Mexico's independence from Spanish rule. A reason to hold their flag up high and parade with purpose.
On this day in the year 1810, Catholic Priest Miguel Hidalgo rang the bell of his little church, calling Mexicans to fight for liberty. This was the beginning of the Mexican War of Independence, which lasted 10 years.
