Man arrested for public indecency

September 13, 2006

Tifton-- A Tifton man is arrested for exposing himself in front of a child and apparently it's not the first time he was caught in the act.

43-year-old Michael Smith is charged with child molestation and public indecency. Police say he exposed himself in the Tifton Salvation Army thrift store.

A 3-year-old boy thought Smith was urinating and told his mother. She then saw Smith exposed. He took off when 911 was called.

"Our officers were able to catch up with him. He was identified at the scene. Further investigation revealed that he was actually inappropriately exposing himself while looking at the women coming in and out of the store," says Detective Shane Benefield of Tifton Police.

Smith has previous public indecency convictions in Tift County and other charges in Worth County. Police say he was just released from jail about a week ago for a similar offense.  He's currently in the jail.
