Albany -- City finance director Shirley Smith is being fired. Smith was suspended three weeks ago.

Last Thursday, she got a letter from City Manager Alfred Lott notifying her of his intent to terminate her. Lott cites employee abuse, inefficiency, negligence, retaliation and an unauthorized trip to Canada as reasons for her dismissal.

He also states that he has no faith or confidence in her ability to effectively function as Finance Director.

Smith has an opportunity to respond to the allegations September 18th at the City Manager's office.

If Lott determines she is not able to operate as finance director, her termination will be effective September 22nd. Shirley Smith had worked for the city of Albany for 20 years.

We could not reach Smith for comment.
