A historic theatre in Albany is recognized

September 11, 2006

Albany -- A 79-year-old theatre in downtown Albany gets special recognition and money to help save it.

The Albany Theater is being restored, and a 150-thousand dollar "Save America's Treasures" grant will help pay for it.

Plus the National Park Service just added the theatre to the National Register of Historic Places.

"We all felt like this would be the icon of Downtown Albany. I mean it is an original building that has not been torn down, so it just makes me feel wonderful," said Terese Cohen.

The Albany Theater is one of the few remaining landmark buildings in Albany that served as a joint gathering place for blacks and whites during segregation. There were separate entrances and seating areas.

Renovations to the theatre are expected to be complete in 18 months.
