Albany State defender honored by SIAC

September 11, 2006

Albany - Albany State's Alton Pettway is one of the best defensive players in the nation in Division II football.

But the Kentuky State Thorobreds have to think Pettway is Superman after his performance in the Rams 21-7 win Saturday night.

Pettway is the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference defensive player of the week for his performance against the Thorobreds where was credited with 4 1/2 quarterback sacks and forced two fumbles.

It is something about Kentucky State that brings out the best in Pettway.

The senior from Bay Minette was the conference's defensive player of the week for his performanc in last year's game with Kentucky State with 14 tackles and two quarterback sacks.

Pettway doesn't know what about Kentucky State that brings out his A-game but he is happier with the fact that the Rams have their first win of the season.

Alton Pettway said "This is the third game of the season and we have got to get rolling by now. We have got two losses under our belt. It was our first win . This week we are going to try to make it number two."

Albany State freshman Nick Kyles, who caught two touchdown passes Saturday, is the SIAC newcomer of the week.

It is a short week for the Rams who are back in action Thursday night at the Municipal Coliseum against Stillman College.
