Lee recall effort mounted

September 7, 2006

Leesburg -- There's a move to recall two Lee County Commissioners for misuse of their county-issued cell phones. Former Lee County Utilities Authority member Bob Usry says the county's $4,000 a month cell phone bill is a waste of taxpayer's money.

Usry says he also has copies of commissioners cell phone records, where two in particular, Jo Ealum and Wally Roberts are calling people outside of their capacity as commissioners. Usry is holding a recall meeting next week at Century Road Fire Station.

Lee Countian Richard Gerfen says he's not sure the commissioners should be recalled, but he doesn't know if they should be provided with cell phones either. "I don't think about being recalled. I think they need to be adhered to and keep the county money at home rather than squander it."

Usry was removed from the county utility authority after being appointed just weeks before. There were charges commissioners made that move because Usry did not support Chairman Jackie Sizemore's re-election bid, but Sizemore claimed a more qualified person offered to serve on the authority.

Commissioner Jo Ealum would not comment on the matter right now, but says she plans to hold a press conference next Tuesday after the regularly scheduled commission meeting.
