Thomasville - Georgia's mascot is named UGA.
But UGA VI's real name is "Whatchagot Loran".
A phrase Bulldog fans have heard for almost 35 years when radio announcer Larry Munson calls for an update from the Georgia sideline from Loran Smith.
Loran Smith was talking football and telling his share of amusing stories at Thomas County United Way's annual kickoff luncheon Wednesday afternoon.
Smith says Thomasville played a role in helping Mark Richt become Georgia's current head football coach.
The Florida State football team, where Richt was an assistant coach, spends the night in Thomasville before every home game.
And Smith believes those trips were one of the reasons why Richt fell in love with Georgia and the University.
Smith also says Mark Richt is the reason he is having more fun than ever in broadcasting Georgia football games and it has nothing to do with the fact the Bulldogs have won two SEC titles in Richt's five seasons.
Loran Smith said "For all of those there from the lowest secretary to the lowest freshman manager, he makes everybody feel important. He makes them feel welcome. He makes them feel good. He is the most positive, upbeat fella you will ever meet."
Loran Smith and the rest of the Georgia radio crew will be broadcasting the Bulldogs game this Saturday night at South Carolina.
