Blazers ready for season opener

August 30, 2006

Valdosta - The last football game quarterback Willie Copeland played in 2005 was a 41-23 loss to Albany State when Copeland was playing at Fort Valley State.

Copeland's first game in 2006 will be against Albany State.

Only this time Copeland will be playing for Valdosta State.

Despite transferring to VSU after the Blazers had gone through spring drills, Copeland has won the Blazers starting quarterback job for their season opener.

Copeland has shown he is a quick learner but he already knows plenty about the Rams.

Willie Copeland said "I have played my opponent two times at Fort Valley and I never beat them. So, this is my opportunity to beat them."

Head coach Chris Hatcher said "He has got alot of experience being the starter at Fort Valley for the last two seasons. He has mastered, I won't say he really mastered the offense really well. We feel very confident with him going into the game."

Valdosta State is 11-1 against Albany State with the one loss coming in their last regular season visit to the Albany Municipal Coliseum two years ago.
