Valdosta - The Valdosta State volleyball team is ready to build on the 10 win season last year under first year coach Sia Poyer.
It was a vast improvement for a Lady Blazer team that didn't win a single Gulf South Conference match in the two seasons before Poyer's arrival.
The 2006 season has gotten off to a tough start when VSU losing all four matches in a season opening tournament last weekend.
The Lady Blazers are ready to bounce back at their own tournament, the Ramada Limited Azalea Classic this weekend at the VSU Complex.
VSU will play five very good teams in three days and their coach believes the competition will have them ready for their rugged conference schedule.
Sia Poyer said "You can't play easy teams and expect to be ready for tough competition when it comes time for conference."
Senior Anna Pendowski said "All four years that I have been here we have not conference or anything. And this is definitely the best team we have had since I have been here. And I think we definitely have a good chance of doing that this year."
The VSU team plays St. Leo Thursday at 6:00pm in the opening match of their Ramada Limited Azalea Classic.
The tournament runs through Saturday at the VSU Complex.
