Ceremony celebrates girl power

August 29, 2006

Albany-- Some young girls had a chance to say thank you to the women who give them powerful inspiration.

Girls Incorporated of Albany held its 12th Annual Committee of 100 dinner. The committee is made of women who work to empower girls to be strong and stand up against inequalities.

They also mentor more than 2,000 girls in Dougherty and Terrell Counties. Tuesday night, some of those girls honored the women for their dedicated service.

"I am so happy because without them I probably wouldn't even be right here right now," says 11-year-old Dana Watson.

"This type of event shows that the development of a girl is important and also important for her to see other young women and other women in the community who have beat the odds," says Executive Director LaKisha Bryant.

Some members have been empowering girls for more than ten years. Five women were inducted into the Millenium Club Tuesday night for reaching that ten-year mark.
