Wildcats coaching search moves into high gear

August 28, 2006

Albany - It was not easy for members of the South Georgia Wildcats front office and ownership to watch Saturday's Arena 2 Football League championship game in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The Wildcats, who fired head coach Donnie Davis two weeks ago, had to watch the coach they fired in the middle of last season Chris Siegfried lead an expansion Spokane Shock team to the AF2 title with a roster containing several former Wildcat players including former Westover star Antwone Savage.

South Georgia Wildcats general manager Darren McPhail did have a productive visit to Puerto Rico for the Arena Cup championship game.

McPhail says there are five candidates currently being considered for the head coaching job.

McPhail naturally would not provide any names but did say three are head coaches and two are coordinators.

During his visit to Puerto Rico, McPhail talked with several current and former AF2 head coaches who provided McPhail with some valuable information.

Darren McPhail said "I also talked to other coaches in the league and got their opinion and what they felt about differnent coaches. Were they ready or were they not and how they ran their program. It was just alot of good input that we have added to the work we have done."

McPhail says the Wildcats hope to have a new head coach by the middle of September.

But he adds the team feels that his coaching hire is so critical that ownership wants to make sure they hire the best qualified coach they can find.
