Pluto no longer a "planet"

August 25, 2006

Albany - - The universe has 9 planets - Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto...right? Wrong!

The International Astronomical Union General Assembly is creating a new class of planets called "dwarf planets". That's what Pluto will be classified as now.

The change in history will change the way students study science.

"It is something that differs from what we currently have in our textbooks now because the changes made by Pluto now makes everything in the textbooks incorrect and students need to be able to identify the changes as opposed to the way they were to the way it is now and try to get some understanding as to why they are changing," says Sherwood Acres Elementary Teacher Milton Hall.

Other Dwarf Planets include Ceres and the 2003 U-B-313.
