Gearing up for the school year

August 5, 2006

Tifton -- The school year has begun for many South Georgia districts, but some are still gearing up for a great year. The first ever "Back to School" event in Tifton helped more than 250 students get ready for school.

The event will help make the start of school a little easier for students.

For some Tifton students, it's shaping up to be a good school year.

With free haircuts and free school supplies from the "Back to School" event, students like 9-year-old Myron Stevenson say they're ready to go.

"I got papers, notebooks, glue, a pencil sharpener, crayons, pens, and folders," said Myron Stevenson.

More than 250 students got bookbags full of supplies from the event. All free because of the kindness of some Tifton natives.

"I try to just show them my appreciation by giving back to the community," said Cadillac.

Cadillac Entertainment and Walker Trucking Company sponsored the event because it's an area they want to see prosper.

"I know if they go to school with a haircut, and supplies, they'll get their work did," said Cadillac.

For the young students, the back to school event was an exciting kickoff to the year.

"I like school, and today is my birthday too," said Myron Stevenson.

With bags full of learning tools, these children are ready to get back to school and learn.

School starts for the South Central part of Tifton next Friday. The event sponsors say they will make Back to School Day an annual event.
