South Georgia students given school supplies

August 4, 2006

Valdosta - Some South Georgia students are getting some extra goods to help kick off the school year.  Valdosta Tech and Southeast Elementary School hosted the third annual Operation Good Start.

The program hopes to promote awareness about the importance of parents' involvement in their children's schooling from day one.  Parents who attended conferences with their child's teachers were eligible to get a free back pack filled with school supplies for their kids.

The event was so popular last year that they ran out of bags.
"Hopefully we won't run out this year. Hopefully we'll get everyone in and get a book bag. They're loaded with elmers glue and other necessities as well for the kids. As long as they get their book bags, as long as they're happy and as long as they have their materials for Monday," said event Volunteer Lamark Moses.

The 250 bags are filled with pencils, folders, paper and binders.  About 300 parents attended this afternoon's event.
