Blazers see another QB battle this fall

August 3, 2006

Valdosta - Valdosta State coach Chris Hatcher holding split squad workouts to start fall camp.

Half of the Blazer team worked out Thursday morning and the other half in the afternoon.

The one thing that has not changed is that the battle for the starting quarterback job will be one of the biggest decisions that Coach Hatcher will have to make before the season opener at Albany State on September 2nd.

Junior Clay Callaway had a very good spring but will have to battle last year's starter Barrett Wilkes who missed spring practice due to an injury.

Other candidates could be former Auburn quarterback Allen Tilghmon and Willie Copeland who was the starter last year at Fort Valley State and transferred to VSU after the Wildcats changed head coaches.

Head coach Chris Hatcher said "I really expect that Barrett Wilkes, Clay Callaway and Allen Tilghmon will be the guys will battle for the position going on past performance and going on the spring performances as well."

The Valdosta State football team will host their annual "Meet the Blazers" day on Saturday August 26th at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium.

The event starts with a youth football camp at 9:00 a.m. and the autograph session at 10:30 a.m..
