Tift County teen gets statewide recognition

July 28, 2006

Chula -- A Tift County teenager is recognized by the state Fire Safety Commissioner for making a decision that may have saved lives. John Oxendine awarded 17-year old John Brady the title "honorary fire marshal."

Three weeks ago Brady found old crystallized dynamite in a barn behind his grandfather's house in Chula. Rather than touch the dangerous explosives, he got in touch with fire safety officials who disposed of them safely.

Brady said he didn't want anyone to get hurt, and that's why he informed officials.
