New head coach Brian Van Gorder is bringing a new offense that Eagle fans hope will return their team to the top of the ranks at the NCAA's Division I-AA level.
Winning the Southern Conference usually goes hand in hand with winning a national title.
Appalachian State won the 1-AA national title last year and along with Furman are the preseason picks to win the Southern Conference title this season.
The league holding its football media days this week in Greenville, South Carolina.
The coaches voting the Mountaineers of App State as the preseason favorite to win the So Con title while the media is split between Furman and the Mountaineers.
Georgia Southern, which received one first place vote in both polls, is picked by the coaches and the media to finish third.
The Eagles have put six players on the Southern Conference's preseason squad. Seniors Lance Wayne, Charrod Taylor and John Mohring are first team selections. Thomasville's Russell Orr is makes the second team along with quarterback Jayson Foster and defensive back Brandon Jackson.
Jackson transferred to Southern from Central Michigan in January and won a starting job in spring ball.
In other Eagle news, five Georgia Southern games will be televised this season. The first two games against Central Connecticut State and Coastal Carolina in September will be shown on CSS.
The App State game in October will be shown on Turner South and in games in November against Wofford and Furman will be televised by CSS.
