Two Blazers will not report next week

July 25, 2006

Valdosta - When the Valdosta State football team reports for fall camp next week, two of the celebrated off season additions will not be there.

Head coach Chris Hatcher says that running back Skyler Thornton, who transferred from Florida, has been suspended from the team indefinitely for violating team rules.

Hatcher says Thornton will not play this season which is a blow since the Blazers are razor thin in the backfield.

Hatcher also gave an update on former Thomas County Central quarterback Erik Walden.

Walden told the Thomasville Times-Enterprise last week he was transferring to another school because he was being moved to defense.

Hatcher says Walden actually quit the team right after spring practice.

The coach added Walden was told in the spring that if he wanted to play this season he would have to move to defense.

But that if Walden wanted to remain at quarterback, he would have to redshirt this season because Hatcher said he was not ready to lead the VSU offense.

Valdosta State players report for the start of practice on August 1st and open the season at Albany State on September 2nd.
