Dooly County church burns

July 25, 2006

Lilly, GA --  The Midway Independent Methodist Church building lies in ruins after a late Monday afternoon fire destroyed most of the structure.

The state fire marshal's office is on the scene, and said that while they cannot pinpoint the origin of the fire right now, they aren't ruling out a lightning strike. Neighbors and members of the church believe that to be the cause.

Six volunteer fire departments from across the county tried in vain to save the church.

The church, organized in 1972, has 25 active members, who say that they were able to save a few small relics, including the church history, and the cross from the sanctuary.

Members say their building was destroyed, but not their church family. They will rebuild on the same spot, and will hold service Sunday in a tent on the grounds, at the regular time.

Lilly is about 10 miles west of Vienna, in Dooly County.
