Chehaw's animals are keeping cool

July 19, 2006

Albany -- Animals at The Parks at Chehaw are exposed to hot weather outside.

In fact, Director Doug Porter says South Georgia's climate plays a role in choosing which animals are brought to Chehaw.

The zoo makes sure all the animals have lots of water, plenty of shade, and that they don't exert themselves when it's so hot."We don't do anything stressful and we let them be calm, we give the rhino a big mud wallow so he can go in there and roll around, cool off when he wants to. The cheetahs just lay in the shade, most of the animals aren't really bothered by the heat," said Executive Director Doug Porter.

The animals aren't the only one the zoo works to keep cool, sprinklers at the zoo provide a fun way for visitors to beat the heat.
