Albany - Former Albany State head basketball coach John I. Davis was grooming his assistant Chris Cameron to be his successor.
And Cameron will get that chance at least for this season.
Albany State on Monday namedg Chris Cameron interim head coach for the 2006-2007 season.
Cameron, who starred at Dougherty High and later at Tulane, has been an assistant coach at Albany State for the last four years.
Interim Athletics Director Joshua Murfree says the school has taken the pressure off Cameron by naming interim coach and allowing him to concentrate on the coming season.
Murfree also said that the players familiarity with Cameron and the fact Cameron is well known in the community makes him a logical choice.
Albany State returns five starters and nine players from last season's squad that posted a 16-13 record.
John I. Davis was forced to step down in April as men's head basketball coach and athletic director.
