Valdosta --  4th of July festivities in Valdosta will kick off Tuesday with the first annual Baytree 8-Kilometer Independence Day Race.

More a hundred people have already signed up to participate in the race with many more expected to enroll before the starter's pistol is fired.

The race will begin at 8:00 AM at the corner of Baytree and Gornto and finish in front of the home depot on Norman Drive. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Lowndes Veteran Council.

"On Independence Day, I think its appropriate we recognize our veterans," says Race Organizer Todd Smoot. "We have quite a few veterans running in the event including a couple who will be leading in the lead vehicle."

Veterans participating in the race will be honored with a special race number. All participants will receive a T-shirt and goody bag when crossing the finish line.

All finish times will be posted in the Valdosta Daily Times on Wednesday.
