Bridge dedicated to fallen sarge

June 23, 2006

Coffee County -- A bridge in Coffee County was dedicated Thursday to a Georgia National Guardsman killed last year in Iraq.

Sgt. Mathew Gibbs of Ambrose was killed August 3, 2005 by a car bomb, along with two other 48th Brigade soldiers. The 23-year-old Guardsman was buried in Coffee County last August.

The dedication ceremony came yesterday following a resolution honoring Gibbs by the Georgia General Assembly. The memorial bride is on highway 206 over the Seventeen Mile River.

The 48th Brigade lost 26 soldiers in its one year deployment to Iraq.
