Today is the first day of the Juneteenth Celebration.  Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery a little over 140 years ago.

The Southside Library in Valdosta is sponsoring the four day event.  They are inviting anyone to attend, regardless of race, nationality, or ethnic background, hoping to bring the community together.

"We're just trying to do something, give back to the community, pull the community together because the only way we will survive is to come together as one. So we're working to try and do that," said library manager Beverly Sanders.

A fund-raising dinner tonight at Mathis Auditorium will kick off the Juneteenth Celebration.  The festivities will continue through Saturday at Barbara Park.
