Bunnis, Alma Williams in federal court

June 13, 2006

Valdosta -- A former Valdosta City Councilman and his wife are on trial in federal court accused of stealing $100,000 in federal money.

Bunnis and Alma Williams are charged with seven counts of wire fraud and one count of theft. They're accused of using government money meant for the Eastside Training Academy for personal use from January 2001 to April 2002.

The money was supposed to have been spent on the Foster Grandparent Program and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program.

The Williams' claim all money was given to each cause and monitored by a government specialist. Williams was defeated in November 2001.

In 2003 he was sentenced to 10 years probation, 400 hours of community service, and $7,500 in fines for absentee ballot fraud.
