Albany - The Police Chief says an elderly woman found dead in her Albany home was living in deplorable conditions. Her son, an Albany Water, Gas and Light employee, is charged with her murder.
Eight-four year old Jewel Hooks was found dead at her Edgerly Avenue home Friday afternoon. Chief James Younger says the call to EMS said she had suffered a stroke, but emergency workers found her frail body covered with bed sores. There were insects crawling all over the home.
Her son, 58-year old Robert Hooks, was arrested and charged with murder and cruelty to the elderly.
A long-time neighbor says she saw Robert Hooks check in on his mother regularly, but Mrs. Hooks hadn't come out of the house much in years.
"She was crazy about Robert. She thought a whole lot of her son. I know that because before she couldn't get out, it was her priority to make sure when he came things were right and there was food and everything. I was really shocked to hear that," said Artie Clyde.
