Americus -- The Georgia SouthWestern men's basketball team has a new head coach, and they didn't have to go far to get him.
The Hurricanes announcing today assistant coach Mike Leeder will take over the program from Randolph Barksdale, who will be remaining on as athletic director.
Leeder has spent the last three years as a Canes assistant.
This is his third head coaching position, and Leeder has a number of ties to the area.
"I went to school at Florida State and got my undergrad there," says Leeder, "and having been a head coach at Thomas University, I still have some recruiting ties in the area, and also had some success as a Division II head coach, which is where we're taking the athletic department here at SouthWestern."
The Georgia SouthWestern men's basketball team has some big changes ahead, as they move from the NAIA up to the Peach Belt conference in NCAA Division II.
This is Leeder's third head coaching job, and his resume includes a conference championship at Division II Longwood University.
Leeder says having Barksdale still at the school as Athletic Director should make for an easy transition.
"Coach and I go way back, he's a great guy. I look forward to leaning on his experience. He's won over 500 college games, I'd be crazy not to talk to him and get his opinion. I'm excited he'll still be here as the athletic director and my boss."
