Albany -- A popular south Georgia canine known for helping others is now undergoing treatment for cancer.

The 10-year-old lab, named Hero, underwent surgery several weeks ago to remove cancer from his anal glands. Hero's owner, Marty Harris, says the surgery was a success and the cancer is gone.

Hero is on special diet and is currently undergoing chemotherapy sessions. He has five more to undergo.

Hero has served as a therapy dog for Paws Patrol since 1997, putting smiles on the faces of people he meets. "He's been all these years, working several days a week going to both hospitals, nursing homes, educational facilities," says Harris. "We teach humane education as well as therapeutic visitation."

Pedigree has nominated Hero as one of the top five dogs in the country for his service. Click here to vote.
